What is Duel Commander?
Duel Commander is a 1v1 version of the classic Commander format. It’s perfect for those looking to enjoy the strategic depth of Commander in a more competitive, head-to-head setting. Each player uses a 100-card deck and starts with 20 life, but the real fun comes from utilizing your Commander and unique strategies to outsmart your opponent and claim victory!
Event Rules:
Players:
This event is 1v1 only—each player competes individually.
Commander Decks:
- Each player must bring a 100-card Commander deck, and only one Commander is allowed per deck.
- The deck follows the Commander format rules, which means no more than one copy of any nonbasic card (except basic lands) is allowed.
- Banned Cards: The event will follow the standard Commander ban list. Additionally, the Duel Commander format uses a 20-life starting point for each player, and the Paradox Engine and other similar high-powered cards are banned.
Starting the Game:
- Players will determine who goes first through a random method (like rolling a die).
- Players start with 20 life each, as per the Duel Commander format.
- The game begins with each player placing their Commander in the command zone.
Gameplay:
- Players take turns as in regular Commander, but with a few key differences:
- 20 Life: Each player starts with 20 life (instead of the typical 40).
Winning the Game:
- A player wins by reducing their opponent's life total to 0 or causing them to lose through other means (such as drawing from an empty library).
- Players lose if their life total reaches 0, or if they are forced to draw a card but cannot (i.e., if their library is empty).
